In Vitro: Etidronic acid (1 nM-1000 nM) reduces both the total pit area and pit number in a dose-dependent manner in osteoclasts, it directly inhibits bone-resorbing activity in mature osteoclasts, and it reduces the osteoclast and/or adhesion activity of osteoclasts on dentines.
Etidronic acid (100 nM; 24 hours) induces osteoclast apoptosis, which displays characteristics of apoptosis, including chromatin condensation and changed cellular and nuclear morphology, detected by fluorescence microscopy.
